Need some help, why does our I.F.S.T.A. manual and some training videos show us to go through a restricted opening head first while pushing our S.C.B.A. pack infront of us? John Hutton Training Officer from Kamloops Fire Rescue (retired) instructed us to go feet first just incase there is no floor or stairs as we go. If you push your air pack infront of you and the floor dissapiers – so does you air pack. If you go feet first you can feel for support and go back if there is no floor. Comments?

Situational awareness and sounding the floor is primary when in this situation no matter what direction your travel is. Constant structural evaluation is critical. However it is easier to pull your way through a restricted opening vs. shifting your body feet first, and your body is larger on the top end making it less likely you will get wedged half way through catching up on shoulders etc.

Need some info – going to Village Council to set a “Standadered of training” for our fire department. As you know they are our A.H.J. if they set a standered that relives possible liability to what we need to train to. any one gone through this yet, have any pointers thanks Brian Lauzon TYraining Officer Chase Fire Rescue.
