he issue of understaffing is a hot topic these days. Staffing reductions are one of the impacts of our struggling economy. On a number of occasions I have discussed this topic – mostly from the perspective of budgets and politics.

Now, it’s time to look at the stark reality of how staffing can impact the situation awareness of commanders. In my book onFireground Command Decision Making, I discuss one of the most surprising findings of my research – how significant the impact of staffing is on command situation awareness.

Here is the outline for the session, which runs from 08:00 to 4:30 pm. The presenter, John Astad, runs his own small research and policy organization in Texas that looks into combustible dust explosions in the U.S., and advocates for regulatory change to more effectively address this issue. There have been  a number of high profile dust explosions in the U.S. in recent memory, which resulted in multiple fatalities and in some cases the complete loss of the production facilities.

The session will be held at our head office at 6951 Westminster Highway in Richmond, in the auditorium.

Fire Fighters Conference Held in Abbotsford
Abbotsford, February 3, 2010 – The Fire Chiefs’ Association of British Columbia and the British Columbia Fire Training Officers Association have joined forces to host their annual provincial conferences together in Abbotsford.
“The City of Abbotsford is extremely excited to host this leading edge event, “said Mayor George W. Peary.  “By combining their resources, these groups will be able to collaborate on initiatives that impact firefighters across BC.”
The event will bring a number of renowned speakers to Abbotsford to present on topics including, Training, Administration, and Operational Issues faced by today’s fire service… The BC Emergency Vehicle Technicians Association will also be contributing to the event.
“By pooling their resources, these groups will provide many benefits to firefighters in BC,” said Dean Colthorp, President of the BC Fire Training Officers Association. “We expect the outcomes will be felt for years to come.”
As a major component of the event, the largest Fire Service Trade Show in the Pacific Northwest will also take place allowing firefighters from across the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley to visit Abbotsford and experience what is currently available to assist fire departments in their day to day operations. Exhibitors will be displaying everything from new advancements in technology to exciting new fire apparatus and more.
The Conference and Expo will be hosted by the City of Abbotsford and will take place over nine days from May 25 to June 2, 2011.
