New Fire Chief for Vancouver
Vancouver City Manager Penny Ballem today announced the appointment of John McKearney as Vancouver’s new fire chief and general manager of the Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services.
“Following a national search, the city is proud to confirm John McKearney is the outstanding candidate,” Ballem said. “John joined Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services in 1980 and has served as deputy chief for the past five years. He brings a strong record of achievement, leadership and 29 years of experience with the department.” McKearney has been acting chief since May 2009.
In addition to his career as a firefighter and trainer, McKearney has been very involved with the community and other professional activities. He is a leader with the United Way, a member of the Granville Island Trust and is currently involved with a number of professional activities including the Fire Advisory Board for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, the Fire Chiefs’ Association of British Columbia and the Office of the Fire Commissioner’s Diversity Committee. McKearney is currently in the final stages of his studies for a Master’s Degree in Leadership from Royal Roads University.
“The department is undergoing a comprehensive fire operations review which includes an assessment of core responsibilities, service to the community and maintenance of infrastructure,” Ballem added. “John will provide the strategic leadership required to create a renewed vision and operational plan for the department in the wake of this important review process.”
